Welcome to this exclusive interview with India Butts—mentor, author, and Research and Development Quality Manager at a Cosmetic Manufacturing Company. From her roots in Roanoke, Virginia, to growing up in Greater Atlanta, Georgia, India has built a remarkable career spanning over a decade in Research & Development within the Hair Care Industry.
Today, we dive into her journey as an author, entrepreneur, and mentor to aspiring dreamers.
Q: Tell us more about yourself, India. What’s your background, and what inspires your work?
"I’m a proud wife and mother of two lovely daughters. Professionally, I’ve spent over 10 years in Research & Development in the Hair Care Industry. I earned my degrees from Point University and completed Spelman’s Cosmetic Science program. Beyond work, I love face painting, mentoring entrepreneurs, and sharing my passion for cosmetic science through my books, Hattie the Hair Chemist and Face Painting by India’s Activity Book.”
That’s such a well-rounded combination of talents and experiences! I love how your passion for education and creativity shines through every part of your journey.
Q: How would you describe your latest book in three words?
I would say creative, charming, and empowering.
I can tell those words resonate deeply with you. They sound like a reflection of your personality and the energy you bring to your projects.
Q: Who did you write your book for, and what message do you hope to convey?
"I wrote it for children, to creatively introduce them to cosmetic science while encouraging them to never give up on their dreams. I believe education can be both fun and inspiring, and I wanted to bring that message to life."
That’s such a unique and powerful way to introduce kids to science! You’ve not only educated them but also instilled a sense of hope and resilience.
Q: How has becoming an author impacted your life?
"Writing has transformed my life in many ways. It’s given me a platform to share my experiences, mentor others, and grow professionally. Through my books, I’ve reached kids, entrepreneurs, product developers, and hairstylists who are passionate about starting their own businesses."
That’s amazing. It’s clear that your work has created a ripple effect, impacting so many lives in meaningful ways. It must be incredibly fulfilling to see the impact of your words and guidance.
Q: Writing often takes people out of their comfort zones. How has this journey pushed you, and what advice would you give to those who feel stuck?
"I’m naturally an introvert, so writing allows me to express myself in ways I wouldn’t normally. It’s definitely pushed me to grow and step outside my comfort zone. My advice? Keep pushing yourself, even when it’s hard. Find ways to stand strong and believe in your purpose."
That’s such a heartfelt response. It’s inspiring to hear how you’ve embraced writing as a way to grow personally while also helping others.
Q: Many aspiring authors struggle with fear. What would you say to someone who wants to write a book but feels stuck?
"First, congratulations on deciding to write a book! Writing is a journey, and it’s okay to feel nervous. Start by setting a clear goal and writing a little each day. Remember, editing and feedback will help refine your work, so don’t let fear of imperfection stop you. Be patient, and trust the process."
You make the process sound so approachable and encouraging! I can see how your advice would inspire someone to take that first step.
